The ATPC has a Fee For Service (FFS) Braille production program for learning institutions outside of the California Community College Network. We provide the best value for customers, based on custom producing the highest quality products in the timeliest manner.
Our FFS Products include:
The Alternate Text Production Center strives to provide the quickest turn around on all orders for Braille materials. However, due to the nature of our grant, priority will always be given to all requests originating from a California Community college. FFS production will never interfere with CCC production requests or compete for ATPC’s production resources.
Please peruse our Braille Catalog which has over 400 Braille text books.
Many production variables determine the cost and length of time for a project to be completed. In particular, Braille transcribing, of a math textbook, best highlights these variables. The following paragraphs attempt to underscore the various factors that can significantly effect production efforts.
Beyond utilizing specialized math code, called Nemeth*, to transcribe Math textbooks, many inherent design features of these books greatly impacts Braille production costs.
A math book that is 700 pages can range from $12,000 to $45,000 to transcribe into Braille. Typically, math transcription can range from 4 to 10 Braille pages per one page of printed text, not counting the graphics. Many graphics require multiple pages, depending on their complexity.
Higher production cost may result, if any textbook has the features listed below.
*Nemeth Braille is a higher level of expertise from regular literary Braille. It is important to ensure your Braille reader is proficient in reading math Braille code, called Nemeth. As a service to our potential customers, we can provide an evaluation tool to assess the reader’s Nemeth abilities.
The California Community College's Alternate Text Production Center (ATPC) is available to transcribe Braille textbooks or projects for Learning Institutions. For the most accurate Braille cost estimate, ATPC requires a hard copy of the book. Precise costs can not be fully calculated until the book has been transcribed, because how the Braille text falls on the page and the numerous issues related to Braille formatting.
A Purchase Order from a customer will immediately start the Braille transcription project . Many customers will request transcription of specific chapters, exercises, and math problems that the student will be working on, i.e., every odd problem. An additional option to defray costs is to find another learning institution that may be using the same book and be willing to share the transcribing costs. This information may be acquired from the publisher.
